That'll be the law set down by our elected officials that protects the State then. Which is why, time and again, the police break the law and get away with it thanks to their buddies in the IPCC. And which is also why I wouldn't expect to see any policemen or women being prosecuted any time soon for their actions in relation to the student protests. Do you want to put money on it?

Highlander the police just follow the law set down by our elected officials, hence if there is a problem the blame lies at the feet of those like myself who vote for mainstream political parties. The people decide who is in government granted its not true democracy but mainly because people vote the way there parents voted or do what the newspaper/tvs tell them to do.

The police are the State's paramilitary wing and the media are the State's propaganda wing. Both exist to protect and serve the State's interests which, 95% of the time, are not your interests. But still, its good to see you toeing the line and sticking to your bad apples theory despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Thanks for the information its always good to learn more as the details of this "incident" are rather muddy. I do think its about time that this was bought out into the open and a full and truthful account heard although I suspect it will be 30-40 years before this happens.

A couple of commonly held misconceptions in your account of Jean Charles de Menezes.

Firstly there was no instruction to shoot, or "kill order" as you put it. The firearms team were asked to perform a "hard stop",
a determined and possibly aggressive arrest at gunpoint and nothing more. The decision to shoot was entirely down to the two officers who pulled the trigger. They say they did so in self defence in the "honest belief" that Menezes was about to detonate some (unspecified) device. They say they went down to the platform with no predetermined idea of what they might do. Despite suspicions of perjury that "honest belief" will never be tested in a criminal court.

Secondly, the wanted man Hussain Osman was not living in the same block of flats as Menezes. Whether Osman had ever lived there we do not know; the single piece of evidence linking him to that addresss was out of date and uncorroberated. At Osman's trial Nigel Sweeney QC for the crown prosecution told Woolwich Crown Court - "Osman lived .. in a ground-floor flat at 40 Blair House .. Stockwell ..”. “.. the address that Osman had registered in at the gym in 2003 was not where he had been living at the time before the bombings.” The inquest jury was not told this and judging by his memoirs Lord Blair remains clueless.

Just noticed a tweet from someone "So, Visa & MasterCard happy to process payments for KKK (http://bit.ly/eypluS - NSFW) but @WikiLeaks is too much" thanks to twitter user sunny hundal. This is madness its fine to donate to a religious hate group that used to beat up black people, that is known to have in the past been involved with criminality and proved in court. But Wikileaks an organisation that in my mind has some issues and I dont like some of there methods, but ultimately an organisation that does nothing more than print the inconvient truth is too much. It just shows the madness of a country which is this week hosting international free press week. Are the US authorities going to chase the owners of news international, the New York times or the guardian? Nope thought not.

Have yet to watch this one, but am a follower of the films myself. Saving the books until Chloe is old enough and will get her to read them to me! Just wanted to say that I find the Disney/Pixar films absolutely amazing these days. They are very magical, and tend to have more than one level - the basics for the kids, and something deeper for the adults that often brings a tear to your eye - the most memorable of recent times being 'Up'. Lexi isn't really old enough yet, but perhaps when she is, you'll find yourself tagging along to kids films with your niece, and will get a chance to rediscover that magic more often, like I have done with my kids!

I think the points you make are very good too. Flexible working should be a boon but due to the fact that most managers are unable to actually manage anything they cant schedule the cover correctly :( Also about being over qualified its a joke but I guess there are some educated mothers who after working part time for a while decide that full time is only another couple of hours a day and then start looking back at having a career.

If they made more jobs available that were accessible to those of us with children in full-time education who simply want to be able to work during school hours that would be nice too!

Seems you either have to manage without, or agree to put your children second place in your life by getting a job that involves them going into breakfast- and after-school-clubs and you never seeing them.

It also doesn't help that it's very difficult to get a simple retail or admin job when you have a degree, because employers take one look and dismiss you as "over-qualified" and assume you're only looking as an interim measure while you wait for a proper "career". They don't seem to appreciate that when people like me apply for jobs like that it's because I DON'T want a career! I just want something to fit in around the kids and bring a little extra cash in to help pay for tap lessons, gymnastics, rugby, etc.!!!

I agree with a lot of what you have said. I didnt like PFI and outsourcing as that just gives good money away with little positive benefit to the tax payer or the employees which are then employed by at cut prices.

However labour did increase the amount of money it spent on health and as an end user of NHS services you can see the difference with the new hospitals and better patient experience.

As for Brown and Blair they are the reason I didnt renew my labour membership back in 1996, however I continue to believe that the labour party offers the best chance of a fairer future for all. And the best way to ensure the labour party continues to offer that chance it needs as many right thinking members as possible.

I agree the labour party isnt ideal but if it was ideal for me it would be regarded as too left wing and never get elected, we need to build a consensus from which to get rid of the tories which are far worse than labour ever were.

Well its still only part way through the series, 3rd episode in the coming week. The daughters seem to be making some progress but the adults not really. Like I said I just hope the family benefit out of cheap programming for the bio channel and Lorraine Kelly "raising her profile" as its called at work!

That's a bit uncanny as I was thinking of doing a very similar post today (but not because of Lorraine Kelly) and I must confess I haven't seen the program. Although I did see an interview with Lorraine Kelly where she said that parts of it would have you "screaming at the TV" - I am assuming because the 'help and support' offered to the family wasn't the 'quick fix the family maybe hoped it would be. So they remained stuck in their ways. I don't know - perhaps you could clarify? And no, I don't think the TV company are in it for the good of the family, they will be "used to provide cheap entertainment". But then if they set themselves up to go on the telly......

It's a tricky one but I'm with you on the anti-judgemental/bullying vibe - you know that.
